Unearthed Labs is an Archaeobotanical Laboratory providing high-quality and deadline-focused analysis to Southern Ontario and beyond. With over 6 years of experience in both academic and CRM environments, a strong proficiency in common plants and seeds of Ontario, a large private comparative collection of native and common crop plants and seeds, and access to an advanced flotation machine. What is Archaeobotany
Archaeobotany is the study of plant materials within an archaeological context. The identification and analysis of which can assist archaeologists in determining site seasonality, plant economic importance, resource use, answer questions about trade and travel, and environmental reconstruction. More than this, soil sampling and analysis thereof is part of a complete site record and excavation, as the very act of performing archaeology is in many ways a highly documented destruction of the very site.
Services
Unearthed Labs offers services related to flotation and the recovery of plant remains, seed, wood, and charcoal identification and analysis in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists (2011).
Flotation
Unearthed Labs is available for flotation services in relation to acquired soil samples from archaeological sites. These services can be provided along with identification and analysis, or done separately.
Identification
Identification of recovered botanical material includes seeds, wood, and charcoal specimens. This work is completed through the use of an Olympus stereo-microscope and aided by a private comparative collection of over +800 species.
Analysis
Analysis of recovered botanical material is available to supplement your CRM or academic archaeological reports. Analysis is
written in accordance of the guidelines outlined by the S&G for Consultant Archaeologists (2011).
